So what is it??? What is the big holiday tomorrow and what month does it kick off?? Why tomorrow is World Vegetarian Day which is the annual kick-off to Vegetarian Awareness Month. Didn’t know that?? Well now you’re aware, and as you become aware check out some of these videos. Then take the pledge to try to eat lower on the food chain the month of October. I’ll try to share some yummy recipes from all my years of being vegetarian. I plan on pulling out some of my first cookbooks, like Laurel’s Kitchen and Deaf Smith Country Cookbook. Save a bunny or rescue a kitten, then enjoy a nice crunchy apple! Happy Holiday!

Last night I took two Benadryl before I went to bed. I usually only take one but these had passed their expiration date and should have been tossed. Instead I doubled up to get rid of some unexplained hives I had. Between the heat and the itching I was hard pressed to get any sleep. That is until those two tiny pink pills kicked in. When I woke up this morning I was so groggy I could barely stand up. The sleepiness seemed to stick with me all day (and no, I’m not depressed!). Which leads me to the no cook dinner which consisted of a bowl of TJ’s Mango Sorbet. That’s it, unplanned dinner after unexplained hives, there is balance in the world again.
After a long drive and a long day in Thousand Oaks I broke up the drive home and stopped in at Native Foods Cafe on my way home. The fare at the office cafe was less than enticing and I ended up with a trail mix bar and a diet coke for lunch. By the time class ended and I was back on the freeway and in all that is glorious Southern California traffic my stomach started grumbling at me. Now dining alone in a restaurant is not really my bag, but I had the Kindle and NF is so casual and single friendly that I didn’t feel the least bit weird. Well that’s not really true because I always feel a bit weird, I just didn’t feel any weirder than usual, ya know? The Westwood location of Native Foods is pretty close to the freeway so I popped off on Wilshire and was soon in front of an:

Our thinly sliced original Seitan, melted cheddar, caramelized onions, crispy tempeh bacon on a bun slathered with BBQ sauce and ranch dressing, lettuce, carrots, onions, and tomato and topped with crunchy battered dill pickles chips. 9.95
With a side of sweet potato fries and a lightly agave sweetened ice tea I was good for the rest of the cruise home. The fries were extremely delicious, crispy and salty and sweet, and I did my best to finish them but knew I would burst if I did. I even signed up for their rewards card which gives me an excuse to go back, again and again. Many things on the menu left to try…I almost took a cupcake home they looked so darn cute…next time, next time.

All summer long the city bemoaned the lack of summer weather. The days were cool and overcast until late afternoon, the evenings fanned chilly breezes around unprepared tourists here to enjoy our famous sunshine. Autumn knocked on the door last Wednesday and instead of letting her in Summer escaped her confines and hit us with a vengeance. Citizens walk around with glazed over eyes and a sheen on their skin that matches the shimmer off the melting pavement. The beaches simmer at over 100 degrees and tempers flare on the road, in the market and in homes. Water starved cats crawl under bushes and houses thinking that the shade will offer them some respite. Babies fuss and demand bottles, harried mothers run ice cubes across their necks and let the melting slivers slide into their cotton blouses. The city blisters and waits for Fall.
The heat has made me tired and crabby and lethargic. The cats want to cuddle and their furry little bodies are just hot and their fur sticks to my sweaty body making me even crabbier. Days like this leave me with no motivation and no appetite. My plan is to simply sit on the couch with a fan blowing on me and figure out what I want to plant in my garden for fall produce.

A chance to use my new vegetarian barbecue cookbook (The New Vegetarian Grill) from Colorado. The weather has turned hot once again. It’ s in the 80’s here by the beach and rising to the 90’s in the Valley. After a slow start this morning we cruised down to At Last Cafe which had been featured on Triple D. For some reason we both thought they specialized in breakfasts but when we got there it was closed and we found they didn’t open until 11:30. So they do everything but breakfast. I read a few reviews later on and most said with only 8 tables a call for reservations is almost a must. They had some interesting sandwiches and salads, it just seems a little extreme to need a reservation. Oh well another time. I’m now deciding what to make for dinner out of the cookbook, I think I’m going to go with Sesame Grilled Tofu, not only does it sound good but I have all the ingredients. On the side I’ll cook up the Bok Choy and Sesame Noodles that I had planned for dinner on Thursday when N. and I ended up at City Mex after running errands. Off to start the cooking, toodles. Lunch had to be quick to prep in between conference calls today. That was a no brainer, a blob of eggless salad, some cute little peppers for scooping, chipotle hummus (yummus), with carrot stick dippers, and a sandwich thin to round it out.
